San Mei Gallery is thrilled to announce the opening of Pending, an exhibition of objects emerging from the overwhelming and sometimes hopeful feeling of limbo we have all been swimming in. The world is collectively pending in a critical moment of history. Between one lockdown and another, with a sunny spell in between; a well-feared US presidential election passed by, whilst the confused cloud of Brexit hovers somewhere. The planet we inhabit is watching as we figure out how to responsibly and creatively be suspended in time and space.
Drawing on the dual sense of suspension and waiting, Pending is an online fundraising initiative consisting of small artist-made objects which hang in space. We invited a number of artists, designers and makers to respond to this brief over the second lockdown, and are delighted to share with you an eclectic collection of objects. These objects will be available to purchase from our website, just in time for winter celebrations. The aim is not only to help the participating artists to replace lost income during this difficult time, but to fundraise for our next Open Call programme. San Mei provides an important platform for emerging artists at a crucial stage in their careers. Supporting this online exhibition and fundraising initiative will enable San Mei to continue working with artists, curators, designers and makers, contributing directly to their production costs and fees. With your help, we are exploring further ways to engage with international and local audiences, including integrating more education projects.
Pending will be available to view online at San Mei’s website from December 1st until December 31st. It will feature unique contributions of more than 70 invited emerging and established, local and international artists. The artist-made objects will be available to purchase at a price of between £50-£500. We look forward to sharing this special collection with you and hope you find something to gift or to treasure!
San Mei Gallery is an independent space for contemporary art in South London, committed to research-led, educational and collaborative exchanges. Operating with an artist-led approach, we support artists and curators to experiment.
